5e PHB Chapters 1 & 2

The start of part 1 (Character Creation) of the book. Starts with a full page painting that they used for one of the first 5e adventures released at last years GenCon I believe, but I could be wrong. But that doesn't really matter. It's pretty, but the rules are the important part. ONWARD!

Winter Has Come and it is Full of Zombies

I managed to get in 4 games of Plaid Hat Games' Dead of Winter board game over the weekend with a couple friends I was visiting. It's a semi-cooperative board game about the zombiepocalypse in the winter time. So not only do you have to survive the zombies, but the cold environment as well.

Boston Comic Con 2014

Holy cow there were a lot of people there on Saturday! My wife and I actually took a break from it in the middle of the day because it was too hard to move around. We didn't make it to many of the panels (2 of them I think), but not for lack of trying. Some we decided we wanted to eat instead, others we were busy doing other things (I was demoing a board game during one of them) and decided we didn't want to stop, still others were poorly handled as far as lining up went and we were not able to get into them (Torchwood reunion and the John Barrowman panels). 

Also, this post is going to have a lot of pictures.

Adventures in the East Mark Channeler (Warlock) Class

The warlock. This is a poorly named class for how I envision it, but I can't think of what name would be appropriate. I guess I'll post it and see if anyone of my 12 or so readers has a better name.

edit: I renamed the class the channeler until I find something better and made some minor updates to the class to better reflect what I'm going for with the class.

Adventures in the East Mark Warforged Class

I like the warforged. Some people might not, but I do and most of my group does. The trick was to make it so that the party wasn't filled with them because I want them to be very rare in my world. Luckily, I enforce attribute requirements, and the requirements to be a Warforged are a little tough (depending on how your table generates attributes).

Adventures in the East Mark Shifter Class

I like the new races that were introduced in the Eberron Campaign Setting. I thought they were more interesting than the "core" races in the Player's Handbook. So I made a version for my Adventures in the East Mark games (or pretty much any Basic Era Game).

Boston Comic-Con Schedule

For me and my wife anyways. Last year when we went (first time to any convention), we had loosely go to a handful of panels on the one day we went. We were so overwhelmed with everything going on that we missed every panel. We did manage to meet most everyone we wanted to see (including my wife getting a graphic novel signed by Scott Snyder and I got a Green Arrow sketch by George Perez) and had a huge amount of fun.

This year, we're going to all three days and are actually staying in the hotel the convention is taking place in. I figure if I go through the effort of making a list, we may actually make it to a few of them this year.

Equipment and Encumbrance

Encumbrance rules are tricky. They're a great idea to limit what characters are holding, but most times, it just gets hand-waved as, "don't go crazy and we're fine". This is a perfectly fine way to play if that's what you want.

I've always thought the max henchmen chart was way to high based on the charisma. Why should a character with a 3 charisma inspire loyalty in even one single person. It doesn't make sense to me. For that matter, 4-5 isn't really any better. Also, based on another Tao house rule (I'm too lazy to look it up right now) I'm modifying how the henchmen rules work as well.

Modified Experience System

I like most of the stuff over at "The Tao of D&D". I don't want to use all of it, as it requires a huge amount of time investment to do the research and everything else he's doing to get a lot of the stuff he's talking about to work. That's awesome. I don't want to do it. For me, I don't think it'll add enough for the amount of work it would require of me. He likes doing it. Makes it worth it for him. One of the things I will steal is his experience system.

Interrupting Spellcasters

Semper Initiativus Unum has an interesting post on interrupting spellcasters through some of the older systems. Not overly indepth, but it's interesting. I may have to think of something for 5e, because I do like the idea of spell interrupts, but 5e doesn't have them by-the-book.

Expose Yourself

Gnome Stew has a good article about exposing yourself to many different systems. Personally, I get a kick out reading rules books and trying to figure out what type of game it supports. Not the genre, but the feeling of the rules. It's something that I find fun. If I had more time and money, I'd read everything I could.

There's too many armor types in 5e. I really like the Leather, Chain, and Plate set up of older editions. It's also way less things for me to have to remember and not have to look up when armor is looted.

Overpowered Cantrips

I know we haven't seen the monster's yet, but based on what I've seen for weapon damage vs spell damage, Wizard cantrips do to much damage.

Over at the Tao of D&D, the author makes a good point about players and the state of the more modern games. I agree with most of it. He's a little more aggressive sounding (to my eyeballs anyways) than I would be making this point, but the point still stands.

Archie Superheroes

Archie is getting ready to relaunch their superhero line as Dark Circle. First announcementsare a new female Shield,  a Fox ongoing continued from the previous mini series, and a dark and fruity take on The Black Hood.

I haven't read much Archie stuff, but the Shield might be something I check out depending on future teases. I don't need more dark and gritty vigilantes and I can't seem to get behind the art for the Fox. Hope all three do well though!

So today I was doing some outdoor house work. When I was finished (mostly I just decided I didn't want to do anymore today), I was on my way back inside when I met the mail man at my door. And boy did he have a package for me. No this is not a porno. I gots me my box set that I kickstarted! Woot!

Backgrounds and Inspirations

I think the Backgrounds mechanics in 5e are interesting in theory, but add an extra decision to make at character creation. The information related to the Inspiration mechanic even more so.

5e Racial Teases

I may be late to this, but someone besides me may not know already.

Enworld has two posts one about the Tiefling, and the second is a list of races from the new Players Guide.

Ability Score Overload in 5e

I think that 5e (the classes revealed so far anyways) have to much attribute gains. Raising one attribute by 2 or two attributes by 1 seems like every class will have their prime attribute at 20 really early, and Fighter's will be close to maxing all of their stats before long. I have three different rule ideas for "fixing" it.

5e Monster Manual Increase

Mike Mearls just announced that the Monster Manual is going to be 32 pages longer with no increase in price due to the amount of monsters they want to fit in. This is good and bad news as far as I'm concerned.

Future's Beginning

So I read through Future's End issues 1-10 and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised.

Teen Titans Backbreaker

I like Teen Titans. It just sucks that they haven't been good for a while. The New52 version NEEDED a new creative team. Lobdell is a decent idea guy, but a horrible scripter.  While I generally like Kenneth Rocafort's artwork, he doesn't have the best track record with drawing women realistically.

Quick Post

I link to a lot of OSR blogs because I like the idea of that style of play, but don't necessarily prefer some of those rule systems. I don't think that 5e has reinvented role playing, or that it's revolutionary. What I do think is that (so far) it does a pretty good job of balancing old and new and, most importantly, seems to be easy to house rule without breaking (like the old systems), but has a base that my players seem to like. I would prefer shorter monster stat blocks that what I assume is going to be in the monster manual, but I can deal with that. 5e will probably be what I run because it will make my players happy, but also won't make me annoyed with running it.

But I'm also house-ruling a lot of stuff to make it a little more old school anyways (although not everything I want is probably OSR approved)

Just Say No to Clerics

I don't allow clerics in my game any more. Party because of other bloggers (Delta makes some good points at the bottom of this page), and partly because I want religious characters to be a role playing choice, not a mechanical one.

The Horror of Death Saves

I've been tooling around with out to make dropping to 0HP or lower something that should affect PCs more than just the brief brush with death that they tend to just pop back from like nothing ever happened, but also not add a new chart of injuries or criticals that add permanent wounding.

Future of the Blog

The next few posts will most likely be various house rules I'm tossing around for 5e. Truth be told, most of the posts will probably be 5e flavored because that'll most likely be what I'm running/playing almost exclusively because of the groups I play with.

Seemed nifty, I liked the fact that it seems very easy, but also not needed. Like everything else, use it if it helps, toss it if it gets in the way.
