5e PHB Chapters 1 & 2

The start of part 1 (Character Creation) of the book. Starts with a full page painting that they used for one of the first 5e adventures released at last years GenCon I believe, but I could be wrong. But that doesn't really matter. It's pretty, but the rules are the important part. ONWARD!

I Broke Down and Bought 5e

I asked my wife, now that she's played in a half dozen or so games of Adventures in the East Mark, whether she likes the race as class older system, or prefers the newer system and having race and class separate.

Hit Points

This post is going to talk to a few potential house rules to player HP and some damage rules. Like most of my current rules, check out the Tao of D&D blog for the original versions and many other rules and information on D&D. It's a great read.

Now, I'm done being an advertiser. On to the house rules!

Winter Has Come and it is Full of Zombies

I managed to get in 4 games of Plaid Hat Games' Dead of Winter board game over the weekend with a couple friends I was visiting. It's a semi-cooperative board game about the zombiepocalypse in the winter time. So not only do you have to survive the zombies, but the cold environment as well.

Large Creatures Be Scary, Yo

Continuing from the last post about increasing large creature HP to make them more of a threat, they should be scary because of their bulk being tossed around, not just their HP totals.

HP Per Creature Size

I haven't posted anything in a few days. I haven't really worked on anything D&D related or finished reading anything that I could review since I've gotten back from Boston Comic Con. I've had a lot of stuff to do around the house and work. I'm back into it for at least a little while. This post is about hit points and how I'm changing them for monsters.

Boston Comic Con 2014

Holy cow there were a lot of people there on Saturday! My wife and I actually took a break from it in the middle of the day because it was too hard to move around. We didn't make it to many of the panels (2 of them I think), but not for lack of trying. Some we decided we wanted to eat instead, others we were busy doing other things (I was demoing a board game during one of them) and decided we didn't want to stop, still others were poorly handled as far as lining up went and we were not able to get into them (Torchwood reunion and the John Barrowman panels).

Also, this post is going to have a lot of pictures.

Adventures in the East Mark Channeler (Warlock) Class

The warlock. This is a poorly named class for how I envision it, but I can't think of what name would be appropriate. I guess I'll post it and see if anyone of my 12 or so readers has a better name.

edit: I renamed the class the channeler until I find something better and made some minor updates to the class to better reflect what I'm going for with the class.

Adventures in the East Mark Warforged Class

I like the warforged. Some people might not, but I do and most of my group does. The trick was to make it so that the party wasn't filled with them because I want them to be very rare in my world. Luckily, I enforce attribute requirements, and the requirements to be a Warforged are a little tough (depending on how your table generates attributes).

Adventures in the East Mark Changeling Class

The Changeling is an interesting class. More of a city character rather than a dungeon crawler, but there's interest in my group for the class. So here goes.

Adventures in the East Mark Tiefling Class

Second class I added to my game: the Tiefling. I'm not a huge fan of them, but my wife loves them. I decided to make them a Mage/Thief, figuring that makes sense for what they are.

Adventures in the East Mark Shifter Class

I like the new races that were introduced in the Eberron Campaign Setting. I thought they were more interesting than the "core" races in the Player's Handbook. So I made a version for my Adventures in the East Mark games (or pretty much any Basic Era Game).

Boston Comic-Con Schedule

For me and my wife anyways. Last year when we went (first time to any convention), we had loosely go to a handful of panels on the one day we went. We were so overwhelmed with everything going on that we missed every panel. We did manage to meet most everyone we wanted to see (including my wife getting a graphic novel signed by Scott Snyder and I got a Green Arrow sketch by George Perez) and had a huge amount of fun.

This year, we're going to all three days and are actually staying in the hotel the convention is taking place in. I figure if I go through the effort of making a list, we may actually make it to a few of them this year.

AitEM: Rappan Athuk - Entering the Mouth of Doom

So I ran my first game of Rappan Athuk using Adventures in the East Mark (with my house rules) and it went great. Everyone had fun and it ran very smoothly.

Equipment and Encumbrance

Encumbrance rules are tricky. They're a great idea to limit what characters are holding, but most times, it just gets hand-waved as, "don't go crazy and we're fine". This is a perfectly fine way to play if that's what you want.

I don't.
